What are you doing on MLK Day?

by Ngozi Osuagwu, MD | January 16th, 2023

What are you doing on MLK Day?

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is not considered a holiday at my work. If you want it off, you must take it as a vacation day, which I did. One of my colleagues asked me what I would do on my day off. I said I would use the day to reflect on the words of Dr. King so that I could be a better person for the rest of the year. Every time I listen to his speeches and read his words, I am amazed at his foresight. Although there has been tremendous advancement in technology and science since his death, his words never grow old. It is still relevant today.

As previously mentioned, I usually pick out a few quotes and reflect on the words.

The time is always right to do what is right.

I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

Whatever your life’s work is, do it well. A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better.

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

I hope you will find time today to reflect on his words.

The book discusses common gynecological and women’s health issues in a series of witty and entertaining letters. These letters, all educational, offer suggestions on what approaches to take in tackling the medical problems that typically bring women to an ob/gynecologist. The letters are spiced with art, a poem and quotes. Although its emphasis is on gynecology and women’s health, it touches on some other medical issues that make women visit their doctors.

The second half of the book briefly discusses the most common gynecological conditions and also provides an overview of sexually transmitted infections. A list of annotated websites dealing with the different topics in the book is provided for the reader who wants to pursue each subject in depth.
