    Looking in the Mirror

    Looking in the Mirror

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) is the nation’s leading group of physicians dedicated to improving women’s health. If you want information you can trust on women’s health, their website is the destination for women’s health information backed by the nation’s leading experts in women’s health care. ACOG is genuinely committed to changing the culture of medicine and taking actions to address racism.

In celebration of Black History Month, ACOG asked its Black members to share their artwork – visual, written, music, and more. This year’s theme is African American and the Arts. I was honored that they accepted my poem “Looking in the Mirror,” found in Sincerely, Your Gynecologist. It was published in their weekly newsletter this past Friday.

    “Looking in the Mirror”

I looked in the mirror the other day and I saw this woman,

     This beautiful woman,

And I wondered why I had never seen her before.

I wondered why it never occurred to me that she had a reason for

I wondered why it never occurred to me that she didn’t need to

     have someone define her.

I wondered where she had been all this time.

Yes, I looked in the mirror the other day,

     And oh my God,

     I saw her.

I saw someone who needed to be here,

Someone who was meant to be.

I chose this poem to remind women to pause and look at themselves.   I wanted us to know that we have a reason to be here. Sometimes we do so much for others, we forget to do for ourselves. This poem is part of self-care. This is where we begin to take care of ourselves so that we can do all we want for our loved ones.  I hope you will look at your whole self – head to toe and love yourself. This poem motivates me to continue my health journey. I am motivated to eat healthy, exercise regularly, take my medicine as prescribed and get enough sleep.

I thank ACOG for recognizing the power of this poem and providing a platform for allowing me to share it with a broader audience. I am honored to be part of an organization dedicated to keeping my sisters alive and healthy.

The book discusses common gynecological and women’s health issues in a series of witty and entertaining letters. These letters, all educational, offer suggestions on what approaches to take in tackling the medical problems that typically bring women to an ob/gynecologist. The letters are spiced with art, a poem and quotes. Although its emphasis is on gynecology and women’s health, it touches on some other medical issues that make women visit their doctors.

The second half of the book briefly discusses the most common gynecological conditions and also provides an overview of sexually transmitted infections. A list of annotated websites dealing with the different topics in the book is provided for the reader who wants to pursue each subject in depth.
