Health Literacy is about Sharing Information
by Ngozi Osuagwu, MD | October 15th, 2023

“I will sign up if you sign up.” We were at a graduation party, got on our phones simultaneously, went online, and signed up for the Columbus half marathon. It was my friend’s first half marathon, and she did very well. She beat me by 9 minutes. She is so pumped up and ready for her next race. We encourage each other to get on their health journey by doing it together.
When I wrote, Sincerely, Your Gynecologist, it was all about encouraging us to start talking about what we can do to be healthy from adolescence to menopause. If you pick up a nugget of information, you share the information. I have been telling my friend that walking is an excellent exercise form with great benefits. Walking burns calories, strengthens your heart, lowers blood sugar, boosts energy, and improves mood. A walker’s high is real. My friend is ready to sign up next year for the race. I had to remind her registration would start next year.
Sharing information is how we learn. On Tuesday, October 17, I will be the guest speaker for the Menopause Sister Circle. It is a free virtual event, but you do have to register. Please click the following link to register. Menopause Sister Circle is one of the events put on by the Diva Movement Inc. Their mission is to empower, motivate, and inspire women to move confidently in the direction of their dreams. They are about elevating your business, empowering your mind, nurturing your body, and igniting your soul. Along with the Menopause Sister Circle, where women over 40 can share valuable information, they have other events. You can check the website for more events.
October is Health Literacy Month. Health literacy is the ability to find, understand, and use the information to make decisions about our health and those of our loved ones. Health literacy is about sharing accurate information. Thank you for always sharing the information provided to those you believe will need it the most.
